5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthier Smile

Like most people, you may be using the last few weeks of the year to think about what you want to achieve in the coming months. In fact, nearly 50% of Americans partake in this tradition. If achieving a healthier, happier smile is on your list of to-dos, then here are some New Year’s resolutions to start your year off on the right foot!

#1. Floss, Floss, Floss!

Have you fallen out of the habit of flossing? According to a recent study, nearly 33% of Americans don’t floss regularly or at all. If you think this oral hygiene essential is optional, think again. After all, brushing alone only cleans about 60% of your mouth. Fortunately, there is no time like the present to form this good dental hygiene habit! To help you get started, set a reminder on your phone each evening or place a note on your bathroom mirror reminding you to floss.

#2. Replace Your Toothbrush Every Three Months

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush (or toothbrush head, for electric alternatives) every three months. This is essential since your toothbrush is not designed to last for 6+ months. Over time, the bristles become frayed and home to food particles, plaque, and bacteria, rendering it virtually useless. So, make sure to disinfect it weekly and replace it every quarter.

#3. Make Healthier Dietary Choices

There’s no doubt about it: what you eat plays a role in your oral health. If your diet is filled with tons of sugar, then cavities won’t be far behind. On the other hand, if you eat mostly nutrient-dense meals comprised of lean protein, fresh fruits, and crunchy veggies, you can promote healthy teeth from the inside-out.

#4. Quit Unhealthy Dental Habits

Do you smoke? Bite your nails? Chew on ice? Use your teeth as tools to open things? These are just a few unhealthy dental habits that shouldn’t make an appearance in 2022. After all, you don’t want to deal with worn-down teeth, gum disease, unsightly chips, and other serious dental problems in the new year.

#5. Visit Your Dentist Twice a Year

Due to the initial shutdowns and the fluctuations of COVID-19 cases, a large number of Americans haven’t visited their dentist in 12+ months. However, it’s important to remember that your routine dental checkups and cleanings play a crucial role in both your oral and overall health. Not only does your dentist check for cavities, but they also screen for oral cancer, look at your bite, and clean the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth to prevent dental problems in the future.

2022 provides a clean slate and fresh start, resulting in the popular mantra, “New Year, new me!” If you are using this time to turn over a new leaf in an attempt to improve the health and happiness of your smile, then be sure to incorporate the above resolutions!
